A Coffee Going Cold, Burnout and My Very First Blog Post ☕

September 06, 20262 min read

Kia ora and welcome! This blog is where I'll be writing about burnout, nervous system health and rebuilding self-trust: what it looks like to run on empty for years - and what it takes to stop. It seems only right that my very first post starts with my own story.

For nearly two decades, my life in high-stakes event production could be summed up in a single snapshot: running around at 5am on three hours of sleep, clipboard in hand, while a coffee I'd bought hours earlier sat stone-cold and forgotten on a speaker somewhere. ☕❄️

Funnily enough, that cold, abandoned coffee was a fair representation of how I treated my own needs while being useful, available and "CEO of Capable" for everyone and everything else - while slowly unravelling underneath it all.

Until the week of my 37th birthday, when I finally said it out loud.

Today, Capsule NZ - an incredible platform created by women, for women - published a guest piece I wrote for them. It's easily the most honest, raw and vulnerable story I've ever put out into the world.

It's titled: The Morning I Finally Told My Husband the Truth About My Burnout… Like 39% Of New Zealand Women, I Was In High Mental Distress But VERY Good at Hiding It

I open up about:

  • The absurd, rain-soaked moment I realised my "I'm fine" baseline was completely broken.

  • The two-week holiday that unexpectedly stretched into an eight-month recovery.

  • The exact moment I looked at my husband Shane and confessed, "I can't go on like this."

  • The nine-word response from him that completely undid me: "Nat, I had no idea. Why on earth didn't you tell me?"

  • Why burnout was never a willpower problem, and why so many high-achieving women find themselves barreling down the exact same highway.

If you've ever found yourself carrying the weight of the world while smiling and saying "I'm fine," I think you'll resonate.

What's next?

This essay is just the beginning! Keep your eyes peeled - in two weeks, Capsule NZ is publishing part two: a quick-fire guide from me detailing the exact signs of burnout to watch for and simple, actionable tools to reclaim your daily capacity.

Until then, have a look around the rest of my site, grab yourself a fresh (and hopefully still warm!) cup of coffee and enjoy the read. ☕

Stay curious,
